Tennessee continues to hold 10,000+ Native American skeletons in warehouses!
David Woktela recently presented a paper regarding Yuchi Preservation at the World Archaeology Conference continues to reminded us of the continued storage of large numbers of Muskogean and Yuchi skeletons originally excavated by University of Tennessee archaeologists, working for the Tennessee Valley Authority. David stated that “the McClung Museum still has 10,000 human skeletons — mostly Yuchi and Koasati — in a warehouse on Middlebrook Pike. The University of Tennessee claims that they have no idea what people were here before the Cherokee, and that the Yuchi were never living in Tennessee.” The British labeled the upper Tennessee River as the Hogeloge (Yuchi) River on their maps. There is no doubt of a substantial Yuchi presence in Tennessee. Why the University of Tennessee continues to fail to acknowledge that the Yuchi were in Tennessee Before the Cherokee drove them out is incredible. History records that the Cherokee occupied East Tennessee AFTER they drove the Yuchi from East Tennessee in 1714. Tennessee : a short history / [by] Stanley J. Folmsbee, Robert E. Corlew [and] Enoch L. Mitchell.

Of course, I have never personally seen any skeletons being stored in Tennessee, and am not certain that the highly respected McClung Museum is directly responsible for stored skeletons. However, I have repeatedly read reliable reports that the TVA accumulated over 13,000 Native American skeletons over the past seven decades, plus portions of 4,000 more human remains. Twenty years have passed since the United States Congress passed the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA.) The State of Tennessee surely knows that continued possession of those skeletons is in violation of Federal law. Tennessee officials . . . why don’t you just build some nice Indian mounds along the Tennessee River for those human remains? If your TVA structural engineers are capable of building world class dams, they certainly can build world class burial mounds.
